For color cameras, you can enable Force Monochrome in the Preferences setting. When enabled, Force Monochrome produces images with the luminance set to the appropriate gray level and the color channels set to pure gray. Stated another way, a color image is produced, but only the luminance channel is conveying information.
Advantages
- Eliminates the potential for color Moiré patterns due to the sensor color filter interacting with source image.
- Recovers the slight loss of resolution caused by the color filter debayering process.
- Useful when enhanced dynamic range is enabled since the non-linear EDR luminance transfer function introduces a color shift in the non-linear regions.
